Waves

The efficient design of coastal projects can only be as good as the data upon which they are based. Recognizing this, Baird has developed its wave analysis procedures to deliver critical project data for any location around the globe.

Baird's experience with wave hindcasting began in 1980 and continues to be further developed today. As wave model technology has developed, so too has the field of remote sensing, which is critical to wave prediction in ocean settings.

Baird has developed an in depth understanding of the modeling, and the data required to support and enhance these efforts. We maintain a proprietary global wave model that is used in both an operational forecast mode, as well as for project specific hindcasts. This model has the ability to incorporate tropical storms & hurricanes and has been applied to the world's oceans, many seas, and inland lakes.

The power of the project specific hindcast is that it allows for assimilation of local wind data if available, the tuning of the model resolution or other parameters, and site specific output. The value of quality wave data is enormous to almost any coastal infrastructure project, including:

  • Ports - for downtime analysis and structural layout
  • Coastal Processes - for accurate prediction of erosion/accretion and other shoreline processes
  • Coastal Structures - for determining design waves and optimal performance

Baird also provides advanced modeling and analysis techniques in the nearshore region, and in harbor settings. Combined with our field services, this completes the wave services package, and allows us to deliver quality wave information, or innovative designs based on these data.
