Case Study

Whitesand First Nation Shoreline Stabilization

Overview

Project Challenges:
  • The project was in a remote location resulting in challenges for materials sourcing, construction logistics and construction management
  • The soils were a highly erodible and unstable varved clay
  • Permitting conditions limited in-water construction windows due to fisheries requirements; and road use and quarry operations due to endangered species
Project Solutions:
  • The solution consists of a 1400-metre-long revetment and grading to a stable slope.  The slope was vegetated with native species and livestakes
  • 2.7 km access roads provide improved access to the shoreline
  • 9,800 m2 of cobble was placed for fish habitat
  • Consultation and open communication with Whitesand First Nation were key to the success of this project; 58% of all labour was provided by the First Nation
