An assessment of storm damage to a rubble mound revetment protecting a park in Whiting, IN, along with the design and construction of emergency repair works and preliminary design development for comprehensive rehabilitation works for the structure.
Lake Nipigon, ON, Canada
Baird was retained to complete the planning, design and construction services to protect 1,400 metres of eroding shoreline on Whitesand First Nation traditional land, located on the north shore of Lake Nipigon. The design consisted of an armour stone revetment and slope stabilization.
Trents/Holetown, Barbados
Barbados receives large seasonal rainfall, resulting in widespread flooding, yet remains one of the most water-scarce countries in the world. Baird was retained by the Government of Barbados to undertake a comprehensive program to improve stormwater management and flood resilience.
Port Headland, Australia
Baird assisted BHP from the project identification phase through to commissioning and post-construction activities. The project involved assessment of port and channel risk, investment analysis of risk mitigation options which led to the construction of six world-leading escort tugs and a new cyclone rated tug harbour at Port Hedland.
Cartagena, Chile
Baird was retained to evaluate the risks associated with tsunamis in the coastal city of Cartagena. Based on hydrodynamic modelling of tsunamis generated from earthquakes with magnitudes (Mw) from 8.3 to 8.9, potential flood hazards were mapped.
Louisiana, Gulf, USA
This project will restore approximately 120 acres of historic ridge and 1,134 acres of marsh in southeast Louisiana. Over 10M cubic yards of sediment will be dredged from borrow areas located in the Mississippi River and offshore.
Sao Luis, Brazil
This multi-year project involved extensive field programs and 3-D numerical modelling of tidal hydrodynamics and sediment transport, including ship effects, to develop a sediment management program to minimize dredging volumes and related downtime at Vale’s Pier IV export facility in Brazil.
St. Lawrence, Barbados
Baird completed designs and oversaw the construction of a waterfront improvement project for Sandals on the south coast of Barbados. The project involved numerical and physical modeling and the installation of offshore breakwaters and beach fill.
Highland Park, IL, USA
Baird completed coastal modeling and analyses to support design development for a shoreline restoration/enhancement project in Highland Park, IL, located on the east shore of Lake Michigan north of Chicago. The $14.5M project includes beach, bluff and gully restoration/enhancement elements.
Rockley Beach, Barbados
The south coast of Barbados suffered from narrow beaches and shoreline damage, and the need to remedy the situation was recognized. Baird was responsible for conceptual through final design and construction of a boardwalk and headland and beach system.
Valdivia, Chile
A large estuarine wetland, formed by post-earthquake subsidence in 1960, underwent dramatic sedimentary, floral and faunal changes in recent years. A large, multi-phased investigation of the dynamics of the wetland assessed the disappearance of submerged aquatic vegetation and sedimentation in the 40 km long estuary.
Saint John River, New Brunswick, Canada
PSJ has embarked on a CA$205M project to consolidate and modernize the Rodney and Navy Island terminals to accommodate Neo-Panamax container vessels. The project includes the construction of a new 400 m long wharf, dredging the berth pocket and main navigation channel, and landside improvements to the container terminal.
Miami, FL, USA
Post-Panamax vessels entering PortMiami enter at high speeds due to the Gulf Stream but this also increases their squat. Baird measured the motion of 17 post-Panamax vessels entering PortMiami and used this to develop a web-based application to assist the pilots in determining safe navigation conditions.
Port Hedland, Australia
Baird was engaged by BHP to undertake an assessment of the increasing frequency of mooring line failures at BHP’s Port Hedland terminals. This study included analysis of incident root causes, investigation of force and Moored Ship Response (MSR) for selected incidents, and identification and prioritizing of controls and systems to reduce the frequency of mooring failures.

Baird developed innovative physical and numerical modelling of wave-structure interaction for a proposed offshore export terminal to refine design criteria and to support the assessment of structure reliability during the design phase.
Bridgetown, Barbados
Pierhead Marina is a proposed mega-yacht harbour on the south-west coast of Barbados. Baird completed numerical and physical modelling to support the design of this facility and also developed tender documents.
Pampa Melchorita, Peru
Peru LNG retained Baird and RDWI Air Inc. to improve the forecasting of waves, wind, and berth availability of their LNG export terminal. Baird’s solution comprised a new forecasting system that explicitly predicts the moored ship motions and mooring forces over a two-week forecast horizon.
Saint John, New Brunswick
Baird completed a feasibility study for Dillon Consulting Ltd. and Saint John Development Corporation to assess alternatives and costs to upgrade a deteriorating rubble mound breakwater. This breakwater provides pedestrian and vehicular access to Partridge Island, a historical site of significance located near Saint John, NB.
Oshawa, Ontario, Canada
In an effort to ease congestion and consolidate future activities on the Oshawa Port Authority’s eastern wharf, Baird completed an analysis of coastal conditions, design development, preparation of construction plans and documents, and construction administration for a new berth at the Port of Oshawa.
New South Wales, Australia
Baird was commissioned (in partnership with Manly Hydraulics Laboratory) by The New South Wales Office of Environment and Heritage (OEH) to develop a state-wide nearshore wave transformation tool capable of providing long-term wave hindcasts, forecasts, and design conditions.
Chicago, IL, USA
Baird evaluated the existing coastal conditions and developed conceptual alternatives for shoreline improvements along a six mile stretch of Chicago waterfront. The project improves public recreation amenities, shoreline protection and reduces roadway flooding from Lake Michigan storms.
Barbados
The NCRIPP study assessed hazards, vulnerability and risk for a series of natural and anthropogenic hazards in Barbados. The final products include a Coastal Risk Atlas and an enterprise-level GIS and coastal GeoDatabase.
Greater New Orleans, LA, USA
The performance of the hurricane protection system of the Greater New Orleans area was evaluated using an interior drainage analysis of Jefferson, Orleans, St Bernard and Plaquemines Parishes. The HEC-HMS and HEC-RAS numerical models were used to simulate design and actual conditions during the hurricane.
Hall Beach, Nunavut, Canada
Baird completed a coastal protection feasibility study for the hamlet of Hall Beach, Nunavut. The project included development of design criteria, evaluation of protection alternatives, and conceptual design and costing for the three preferred coastal protection approaches.
George Town, Cayman Islands
The Cayman Islands Government is considering the construction of a major cruise berthing facility in George Town Harbour, including two piers, dredging and land reclamation works. Baird was retained by the CIG to undertake a comprehensive environmental and social impact assessment (ESIA) study for the proposed project.

A 3-D numerical model has been developed to study the hydrodynamics, sediment transport and water quality in the Gowanus Canal using Delft3D. This model is being applied to support Remedial Design at the Gowanus Canal Superfund Site in the New York Harbor.

Baird has designed an innovative nearshore reef to control shoreline erosion at Gibraltar Point on the Toronto Islands. In addition to long-term stability and low maintenance, the design supports the ecological health of nearshore environment and enhances aquatic habitat.

Coastal communities around the Great Lakes are at risk of flooding. The Federal Emergency Management Agency contracted Baird to complete a study of coastal threats on Lake Ontario.
Toronto, Ontario, Canada
Planning, design and construction of beach stabilization and enhancement works for two sites in the Eastern Beaches, Toronto. The sites are located either side of an existing system of five offshore breakwaters. Baird provided planning, permitting, design and construction services for this $2.8M project.
Benin, Africa
Baird developed and implemented a very large scale shore protection project, from concept through to completion, of final design documents and periodic construction service input. The project now successfully protects 4.5 miles of coast from erosion.
Green Bay, USA
Baird executed a design development for restoration of the Cat Island Chain near the Port of Green Bay navigation channel. The island provides a new disposal site for clean dredged material, while new habitat provides major environmental benefits and wave sheltering for a nearby coastal wetland.

The Broome Coastal Hazard Risk Management and Adaptation Planning project (CHRMAP) delivered coastal adaptation planning recommendations for the Shire of Broome to manage coastal hazard risk over a range of future timeframes.
Holetown, Barbados
The Barbados Coastal Risk Assessment and Management Program (CRMP) was a comprehensive island-wide investigation to quantify coastal risks, identify vulnerability ecosystems and infrastructure, and to develop mitigation strategies to increase the island’s resilience to climate change and coastal hazards.

Baird developed an industry-leading, multi-hazard cyclone hazard database including models for wind, storm tide inundation and rainfall hazard across Australia from cyclone events. The database has been adopted by major Australian companies in the insurance sector and industry clients with offshore and coastal infrastructure.
Toronto, Ontario, Canada
Baird was retained to undertake a receiving water impact assessment for the Ashbridges Bay wastewater treatment plant, with has a rated average flow of 818 MLD and a peak flow of 3923 MLD. The selected outfall design extends 3500m offshore with a 1000m long diffuser.
Arica, Chile
Baird was asked by Terminal Puerto Arica to assess the condition of the breakwater of the port. The main breakwater was built in the early sixties using 16-ton tetrapods. Due to damage observed during the monitoring program, the elbow of the breakwater was repaired using 5.0 m3 CoreLoc units. A program of annual monitoring has been undertaken since the repair took place in 2007.
Fort Dauphin, Madagascar
Since 1990, Baird has been assisting mining company Rio Tinto Iron & Titanium with the development of a multi-user port on the southern coast of Madagascar.
Ottawa, Ontario, Canada
Baird was commissioned by the City of Ottawa to evaluate the impact of point source discharges such as stormwater, combined sewer overflows, creeks/rivers, and wastewater treatment plants on river water quality at the Petrie Island beach complex.
Republic of Ghana, West Africa
To develop a permanent solution to the shoreline erosion threatening the community, a $100-million project to protect existing homes, infrastructure, and the environmentally sensitive area was executed by Baird.
Prince Edward Island, Canada
The Confederation Bridge spans the Northumberland Strait and connects Prince Edward Island to mainland Canada. Baird completed a comprehensive scour investigation for the project, including the assessment of scour potential, design of scour protection for selected piers and the design and implementation of a scour monitoring program.
City of Port Washington, Wisconsin, USA
The project involved major improvements to a 600 ft. long industrial slip which transformed the area into an attractive recreational waterfront development.
