Arica Breakwater

Overview

Baird was asked by Terminal Puerto Arica to assess the condition of the breakwater of the port. The main breakwater was built in the early sixties using 16-ton tetrapods. Due to damage observed during the monitoring program, the elbow of the breakwater was repaired using 5.0 m3 CoreLoc units. A program of annual monitoring has been undertaken since the repair took place in 2007.

Project Highlights
  • An innovative solution for repairing the breakwater with CoreLoc units was developed using physical model testing.  This solution saved our client 30 % in costs
  • Aerial images over the past four years have been taken from drones. Standard topographic surveys have been replaced by aero photogrammetry from drone images and/or laser surveys
  • No major damage to the repaired section was observed after the 2014 Iquique earthquake
