Case Study

Gowanus Canal Superfund Study

Overview

Project Challenges:
  • Multiple sources of flow, sediments, and contaminants entering the Canal
  • Canal is an active navigation area with commercial traffic (mainly tugs and barges)
  • Vessel impacts disturb bed sediments and are an important factor in cap and armor layer design
  • Client requires a robust and defensible model to support Remedial Design
Project Solutions:
  • Development of a bespoke propeller wash model representing approximately 700 historical vessel transits in the Canal
  • Integration of 3-D hydrodynamic modeling with Automated Identification System (AIS) navigation data
  • Long-term hindcasting of hydrodynamics, sediment transport and bed morphological change, incorporating several unique factors, such as the Gowanus Flushing Tunnel and oxygenation pipe system
