Partridge Island Breakwater Upgrade Study

Overview

Project Challenges:
  • Limited information was available regarding the design, construction and maintenance/repair of the existing breakwater
  • Large tidal range results in significant variation in exposure of the structure to waves
  • Harsh marine environment required a robust solution to limit maintenance requirements
  • Design of upgrade works was complicated by the need to effectively integrate the new works with the existing structure
Project Solutions:
  • Comprehensive UAV and MBS surveys were undertaken to document existing conditions
  • Numerical and empirical modelling and joint probability analysis were used to estimate the frequency of occurrence and severity of wave overtopping under existing and proposed conditions
  • Development of alternative design concepts was guided by extensive practical experience in the design and construction of repair/rehabilitation/upgrade works for similar structures
  • Alternative concepts developed using both quarried stone and concrete armour units, with the possibility that both options could be bid to allow contractors to propose the most cost-effective solution
