Port Miami Squat Analysis

Overview

Project Challenges:
  • The high vessel entry speed required to overcome the Gulf Stream current increases vessel squat
  • A wide range of PPX vessels enter the Port under a wide range of conditions
  • As the vessels transit, the currents switch from a mostly north-south Gulf Stream driven current to an east-west, tidally-driven current
  • PortMiami has a uniquely-shaped, bedrock bathymetry
  • An easy-to-use tool that the Pilots could apply on a daily basis was required
Project Solutions:
  • Baird measured actual vessel entries with high-accuracy surveys
  • Waves and currents were quantified through the deployment of Acoustic Doppler Current Profilers
  • Differentiated vessel motion
  • Baird developed a simple tool to predict under-keel clearance for various sized vessels under various conditions
