Case Study

Port of Oshawa East Wharf Expansion

Overview

Project Challenges:
  • Strict budget limitations due to funding agreements
  • Strict schedule constraints associated with the funding agreements
  • Difficult soil conditions due to weak unconsolidated confined disposal facility materials overtop of peat
  • Maintain port operations through construction in the entrance channel
Project Solutions:
  • To assist the client in understanding their financial commitment, Baird undertook an estimate of construction cost from first principles using material supply prices, construction crew build-up, equipment selection, and productivity rates obtained from our in-house database
  • Worked closely with the contractor to develop an alternative tieback anchor design, eliminating the need for underwater connections, which resulted in schedule and worker safety improvements while reducing cost
  • Developed a robust steel sheet pile – pipe pile (combi-wall) quay wall design with inclined rock anchors
  • Port operations were successfully managed throughout the construction process
  • Construction of the new berth and associated facilities was completed ahead of schedule and within budget
