Port Hedland Passing Ship and Mooring Incident Study

Overview

Project Challenges:
  • The root cause of mooring line failures was undefined prior to the commencement of the study
  • Port Hedland is a complex port with strong environmental forces acting in combination with the movement of large bulk carrier vessels
  • The solutions needed to be implemented by the terminal operator in order for the system to be applied in a real-time, effective manner
Project Solutions:
  • Development of a detailed incident database with root cause analysis reporting
  • Modelling of mooring line failures accounting for the full range of metocean conditions (winds, currents and tides), and passing ship interactions occurring at the time of an incident
  • Automated Identification System (AIS) vessel track analysis and desktop navigation simulation were applied to quantify failure likelihood and to assess mitigation options
  • Comprehensive study recommendations were developed and each recommendation was assigned a responsible party
  • The recommended solution has been very effective at reducing the frequency of incidents, was low cost and utilized existing technology
